Finned on the inside, NOT "Racing Heater Boxes" which are just a tube with a skin on it.
You'll get the most heat possible with these for those cold days. Beware that many shops sell "Light Weight" or "Racing" Heater Boxes, luring you in by their low price. They are low priced because they have NO fins on the inside, just a shell and a J-tube so they do not produce as much heat.
Photo shows the finned core of an OEM HD heater box for ILLUSTRATION PURPOSES ONLY. Lightweight heater boxes have no fins AT ALL around a round pipe. The fins on the available AFTERMARKET heater boxes are not as "pretty" and do not give as much additional surface area as OEM, but additional heat is gained by the fact that the heater box core is larger in cross section than the round tube of a non-finned unit. This slows the flow of hot exhaust, and increases the time to transfer the heat to the finned heat sink.
