The recommended adjustment spec really is 0.006" -- even though some original owner's manuals said 0.004". Although the engines ran fine with 0.004" when new, as the engines got older (valve lash gets tighter as the engine wears), and/or people got lazy about adjusting their valves regularly, there were problems with burning valves.
So the spec was changed to 0.006" which gives more margin for error and wear.
